If medications do not control a child’s seizures, a doctor may suggest a special high fat, low carbohydrate diet called a ketogenic diet. Carbohydrates are strictly limited. Parents have to be very careful that the child does not eat foods that are not on the diet. Food has to be measured and weighed before eaten.
The diet requires a team effort. The family, a dietitian, medical providers, and the child if old enough, all work together to make sure the child follows the diet. Everyone needs to watch for and pay attention to side effects.
The ketogenic diet is not a do-it-yourself diet.
A medical team must be involved.
